Sodium, its sources, functions, deficiency symptoms in human body and its chemical composition

SODIUM:

Sodium is a mineral. Sodium presents in the body fluids not inside the cells. It maintains the normal level of water in the body.

  Chemical Introduction:

  • It is a 6th most abundant element on the earth.
  • It's comprising 2.8 percent of the earth crust.

.   History of sodium:

  • The sodium word is derives from the English word "Soda" and Latin word "Sodanum".
  • The symbol of Sodium (Na) is derives from the Latin word Natrium (Natron) and Egyptian word Ntry (Natrum).
  • Humphry Davy was the first English Chemist who discovered Sodium in the Laboratory.
  • He discovers sodium in 1807.

. Sources of sodium for human body:
  • Apples
  • Guavas
  • Avocado
  • Papaya
  • Mango
  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Celery
  • Beet roots
  • Banana
  • Pineapple
  • Pears
  • Melons
  • Coconut water
  • Cheese

  • Garlic

  •  Functions of sodium in human body:
  • It balances the level of water in our body.
  • It maintains the blood pressure level.
  • It helps in the muscle's contraction.
  • It helps to maintain the normal function of Nervous system.

  • Normal amount of sodium for humans:
Less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day is a part of our healthy food.

  •  Diseases caused by the deficiency of the sodium:
The main disease caused by the deficiency is Hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia is Syndrome of unstable secretion of Anti-diuretic hormone. This disease is shortly known as SIADH.

This disease is caused when we intake so much water. Too much water intake causes the sodium diluted.

Due to which our body's fluid increases and our cells becomes turgid and swollen. This condition is known as Hyponatremia. This disease mostly effects the brain cells.

  • Symptoms of Hyponatremia:
There are some symptoms due to which can we determined the disease of Hyponatremia.
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Muscles weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of energy
  • Nausea
  • Irritability

  •  Treatment of Hyponatremia:
These are following ways to prevent the effects of Hyponatremia.

  • Appropriate quantity of intake water:

Drinking water is very essential for our life. In fact, we can't live without water. So, it is important to intake appropriate quantity of water that our body needs. Our thirst and our urine color tells us that how much water we need to intake.

  • Educate yourself:

Information about any problem is the best option to solve the problem. We should get information about our any issue or any disease.
